In the College Club members between the ages of 5 and 10 are exposed to various university and career pathways through interactive activities such as college monopoly, guest speaker presentations and field trips. The purpose of this Club is to plant the seed of a higher education early in the child’s academic career.
In Junior Heroes, members enrolled in elementary school learn to be effective leaders by organizing various community service projects.
The VBGC literacy program challenges members to ready daily, increase their vocabulary, develop a love for reading, and encourages members to express themselves through creative writing.
Members that frequent the library write letters to U.S. army personnel as well as children with medical disorders. This program not only enhances members’ writing skills, but also teaches them compassion and respect.
Power Hour is an educational program that has three “circuits”; educational enrichment activities in the form of “Power Pages” (skills reinforcement and practice); help with homework and finishing assignments; and tutoring to gain proficiency in specific areas such as math or language arts. The program is offered in small groups and individual sessions.
In Reading Club, our members are challenged to read every day. This helps develop an interest in reading and offers an opportunity to practice their reading skills. Members who read daily, and read widely become better readers. Members are provided monthly reading logs to keep a record of what they read.
